How do I create a Microsoft account?

If you use an email address and password to sign in to Microsoft services such as Hotmail, Outlook, Messenger or Xbox Live, you have a Microsoft account. If you know this email address and password, you should be able to sign in to your Microsoft account.

If you don't have a Microsoft account, you can easily create one by visiting the Microsoft Create an account page. You can use any email address that you already use regularly, or we'll help you create a new email address. If you want to use an email address such as an address, we'll send you a confirmation email to make sure we have it right.

How do I manage the email address that I use for my Microsoft account?

If you want to change the email address that you use for your Microsoft account, you can update it at Once you've signed in, select Your info and then select Manage your sign-in email or phone number.

How do I manage the password I use to sign in?

Change your password

You may want to change your password periodically to keep your account secure. To do this, see Change your Microsoft account password.

Recover your password if you've forgotten it

Because many Xbox users save their passwords on their consoles, it's understandable that sometimes those passwords are forgotten. If you don't know your Microsoft account email address or password, use the Lost Account and Password Solution

What is Microsoft account security information and how do I manage it?

When sensitive account information, such as a password or contact details, is being changed, we send a security code to a phone number or email address on file to make sure that the person making the change is the account owner. The contact details are what we call "security information." All accounts must have at least one contact method, though we encourage including both a phone number and an email address in case you lose access to one of them. You can view your security information by signing in at  and clicking Security & privacy.

Note Xbox consoles not available in all markets.

You use security information to:

  • Control access to your account or activities on, your Xbox 360 console, Xbox Live, Windows and other places where your Microsoft account is used.
  • Keep your account safer and help you reset your password.
  • Provide a way for us to reach you to reestablish appropriate control of your account if you forget your password, or if someone tries to access your account. It's a good idea to keep this information up to date. We'll only use it to protect your account.

What should I do if I get an error when signing in?

If you know your Microsoft account information but still can't sign in to your account, first confirm that there are currently no Xbox Live service alerts.

If there are no current service alerts, use Error & status code search  to look up the error code and find more information about that specific error.

Where can I manage the subscriptions and purchases associated with my Microsoft account?

You can manage all your payment options and view your purchase history when you sign in at To view subscriptions, select Services & subscriptions. To edit billing information or review your purchase history, select Payment & billing. For more information, browse a wide range of support articles regarding your billing questions.

How can I close my Microsoft account?

If you want to close your Microsoft account, you can find out what steps to take at How to close your Microsoft account. You can re-open a closed account within 60 days. After 60 days, the account and all associated details will be permanently deleted from our systems.
