How to uninstall and reinstall a game on Windows 10

If you're having trouble getting a game to play, uninstalling and reinstalling the game might help. This process replaces the files that run the game. Occasionally, these files may get corrupted or altered, especially if you've had a malware problem or are running a game modification on your device.

Some games can even repair the original files without you having to remove the game completely. However, if you installed the game from Microsoft Store, you'll only be able to completely uninstall and reinstall the game.

    Notes

    • Make sure that you've backed up any in-game setting before following these steps.
    • Follow these steps to remove and reinstall games from the Xbox App. When you remove and then reinstall a game from your Windows device, it will automatically remove and reinstall the game from the Xbox App.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Press the Windows button on your device or keyboard, or select the Windows icon in the lower-left corner of the main screen.
    2. Select All apps, and then find your game in the list.
    3. Right-click the game tile, and then select Uninstall.
    4. Follow the steps to uninstall the game.
    5. To reinstall your game, open the Store app, and then select the profile button.
A screen shows the Store app with the profile button highlighted.
    1. Select My Library.
    2. Locate your game in the list of available downloads, and then select the download icon to the right.
A screen shows the My Library tab in Microsoft Store app with the download icon highlighted.

Once your game has been reinstalled, it will be available in the list of apps.

If you installed your game from another location

If you installed your game from a location other than Microsoft Store, such as a DVD or external storage device, follow these steps:

    1. Press the Windows button on your device or keyboard, or select the Windows icon in the lower-left corner of the main screen.
    2. Select Settings, and then in the search bar, type “Programs and features.”
    3. Select Programs and Features from the search results.
    4. Highlight your game in the list of available programs and apps.
    5. If your game supports repair, Repair will appear as an option above the list of games. Select this option to access the in-game repair process.
Alternatively, some games support repair via the Uninstall/Change options. If you don't see "Repair," select Uninstall or Change from the available options and check to see if the game supports repair.
Note If there is no repair option available, check that you have backed up any in-game settings before continuing to uninstall and reinstall the game. Also make sure you have the media that you originally installed the game from, as you'll need it to reinstall.
    6. Select Uninstall or Remove and follow the instructions to remove the game.
    7. Insert the media that you used to originally install the game, and then follow the instructions.
