    Troubleshoot the connection between Windows Media Center and your Xbox 360

    Overview

    Important This article has instructions to help you work around a specific problem. However, these instructions include steps that lower security settings or turn off security features on your console. Before you make these kinds of changes, you should evaluate the risks associated with lowering your console’s security.

    Learn to troubleshoot the most common errors you might experience when using Windows Media Center with your Xbox 360.

    Set up Windows Media Center on your computer

    Make sure that you correctly configured Windows Media Center on your computer. Follow the procedures for your version of Windows.

    This error occurs when Windows Firewall is turned off on your computer. You must turn on Windows Firewall for Windows Media Center Extender setup to complete. Once you’ve set up the Media Center Extender, you can turn off the firewall again if you choose.

    To turn on Windows Firewall, follow the steps in Error "The correct ports cannot be opened" occurs when using Windows Media Center Extender on Xbox 360.

    Your console can’t connect your PC with Windows Media Center. Make sure your PC is on and connected to the network

    This error might occur if you install McAfee Privacy Service after you set up a Windows Media Center Extender on a Media Center-based computer. This service prevents you from establishing a connection between the Media Center Extender and the Media Center-based computer.

    To resolve this issue, follow the steps in Error "Your console can’t contact your PC with Windows Media Center" on Xbox 360.

    Xbox 360 not found

    If McAfee Privacy Service is installed on your computer, you might get this error when you run Windows Media Center Extender setup. The McAfee Privacy Service is not compatible with the Media Center Extender software.

    A connection or firewall issue might also cause this error.

    Try the following solutions to resolve this issue.

    Remove the McAfee Privacy Service

    Follow the steps in Error message “Xbox 360 not found” occurs when you use Windows Media Center.

    Confirm that your console and your PC are connected to the same network

    If you’re getting this error, your Xbox 360 console and your Windows Media Center PC might not be connected to the same network. Your console and PC need to be connected to the same local network through a wired or Wi-Fi connection. To learn more about network troubleshooting and configuration, see:
