Xbox controllers and wireless accessories

Wireless controller can't connect or disconnects out frequently

For information about how to troubleshoot these problems, see Xbox 360 Wireless Controller disconnects or can’t connect.

Wired controller doesn’t work

Disconnect and firmly reconnect the controller's USB connector to the console connector.

For more information, including troubleshooting tips, see Connect a game controller. If this information doesn’t help resolve the problem, your controller will have to be replaced.

Controller doesn't vibrate

  1. Press the Guide button on your controller.
  2. Go to Settings, and then select Preferences.
  3. Select Vibration.
  4. Make sure Enable Vibration is selected.

If your controller still does not vibrate, try updating your console software.

Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kit doesn’t charge when connected to a wireless controller

This behavior can occur for one or more of the following reasons:

  • The battery has reached the charge limit.
  • There is a problem with the charge cable.
  • There is a problem with the battery.

Try to determine which part of the recharging system is causing the problem.

Xbox 360 Wireless Controller

Try using fresh AA batteries or try a different Xbox 360 Rechargeable Battery Pack in the controller to make sure nothing is wrong with the controller. If the controller works with different batteries, the controller isn't causing the problem.

Xbox 360 Play and Charge cable

Try a different Play and Charge cable to charge the battery. If the battery charges correctly with a different charge cable, the original charge cable is faulty.

Xbox 360 Rechargeable Battery Pack

  • Use a cotton swab and some isopropyl alcohol to clean the four gold contacts on the battery pack and on the wireless controller.
  • Try a different Xbox 360 Rechargeable Battery Pack with the charge cable. If the second battery charges correctly, the original battery is faulty.

Once you've determined the source of the problem, replace or exchange the faulty part.

Rechargeable batteries eventually wear out. The length of time that a rechargeable battery lasts depends on how frequently you use the battery and how frequently you charge the battery. If you use the battery frequently, the battery won't last as long as if you use the battery only occasionally.

Wireless accessory doesn’t connect to your Windows-based computer

Try the following:

  • Make sure the accessory is an officially licensed Xbox 360 wireless accessory.
  • Replace the batteries, or charge the wireless device.
  • Remove 2.4 GHz wireless devices in the area to see if they cause interference.
  • Disconnect wireless devices attached to the computer.
  • Make sure that the receiver is connected to a powered USB 2.0 port (the light on the receiver is lit when connected).
  • Reconnect the receiver:
    1. Connect the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver to your computer.
    2. Install the receiver software — either by clicking Install the software automatically when prompted or from the installation CD.
    3. Connect the Xbox 360 wireless accessory to your computer.
