Playing backward-compatible games on your Xbox One

Select digital and disc-based Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games can be played on Xbox One. These backward-compatible games use an emulator for the older Xbox operating systems, providing most features of those systems, such as screenshots, broadcasting, and Game DVR.

  • For a list of backward-compatible games for Xbox One, see the Backward Compatible Game Library.
  • To see if games you own are backward compatible, sign in at My games, then select Xbox 360. If a game shows as being Backwards Compatible, you can play it on Xbox One.

How to play backward-compatible games on Xbox One

Just pop your game disc into your Xbox One. If a digital game you bought is compatible with Xbox One, look for it in your games list under Ready to install.

Accessories and Kinect

Accessories designed for Xbox 360 or Original Xbox, and games requiring those accessories, don’t work on Xbox One. This means racing wheels, fight sticks, and other accessories won't work with Xbox 360 or Original Xbox games you play on Xbox One. Also, games that use the Xbox 360 Kinect will not work with Kinect on Xbox One.

Play backward-compatible games with friends on Xbox One

Start a party chat using either the Xbox One party chat or the in-game Xbox 360 party chat.

Xbox 360 or Original Xbox to Xbox One party

To party chat with friends who are also playing on Xbox One, press the Xbox button , then select Multiplayer > Start a party. This works for anyone on Xbox One, whether they’re playing games made for Xbox One, Xbox 360, or Original Xbox.

Xbox 360 to Xbox 360 party chat

To start a party with friends using Xbox 360, go to the Xbox 360 guide while you're in the Xbox 360 game by pressing the View  and Menu buttons  at the same time. Then select Party > Invite Players to Party > Select the friends you want to play with.

Once your friend accepts your invite, you'll both join the party.

Playing a multiplayer backward-compatible game on Xbox One

If a game supports multiple players on the same console, you'll be able to add a second player to a game as you’d normally do on your older Xbox. Make sure both people first sign in on Xbox One.

If you hit problems with backward-compatible party or multiplayer games, try the Xbox One Multiplayer Game Solution.

Xbox 360 achievements

If you earned achievements on Xbox 360, you'll still have them when you play on Xbox One.

View your Xbox 360 achievements by:

  • Using the Achievements feature in your Xbox 360 game
  • Selecting Achievements from the Xbox 360 guide
  • Selecting Achievements in the Xbox One guide
