Use PlayTo to stream Xbox Music and Xbox Video content to your console

PlayTo is a feature of Xbox One and Xbox 360 that enables the console to receive and play streamed media from compatible devices and apps, including Xbox Music and Xbox Video.

Note PlayTo is available only on devices that have DLNA playback capabilities, such as computers and some phones. You can only use PlayTo with your Xbox console if you're running Windows 8.1 on your PC or device.

This page describes how to stream Xbox Music and Xbox Video content.

  • An Xbox One or Xbox 360 console with PlayTo enabled.
  • A computer or other device that's running Windows 8.1, along with Xbox Music or Xbox Video. This computer or device must be on the same network as the console.

Stream media to your console from a computer

The following steps describe how to stream media from a computer to your console using Xbox Music or Xbox Video. The screenshots show you the steps for Xbox Music, but the steps are the same for Xbox Video.

  1. Start Xbox Music or Xbox Video on your computer.
  2. Select a piece of content (a song or a video, for example) that's stored on your computer.
  3. Swipe from the right of the screen and select the Devices charm.
  4. Select Play.
  5. Select your console from the list of devices.
If your console is turned on, the media should start playing.
The Devices panel is open in Xbox Music with 'Xbox 360' highlighted.

Add your Xbox One or Xbox 360 to the list of devices on your computer

Don't see your console in your computer's list of devices? Here's how to add it.

  1. Swipe from the right side of your screen and select Settings.
  2. Click Change PC Settings.
  3. Choose PC & Devices from the navigation pane on the left.
  4. Choose Devices.
  5. Click the + (plus) symbol to add a device on the right.
  6. Choose your Xbox One or Xbox 360 console.
Note Your Xbox console must be turned on and connected to the Internet for it to be discoverable by your computer.

If your console doesn't appear as an available device, see PlayTo overview for Xbox 360 for information about enabling PlayTo on your Xbox 360 or Change the Xbox One console preferences for information about enabling it on your Xbox One.
