Error C000020C occurs when your Kinect Sensor doesn’t turn on


You see the following message and error code when your Kinect sensor doesn’t turn on.

The Kinect sensor was unplugged

Error code: C000020C

This may mean that the Kinect sensor is not connected properly, or a necessary update has not been installed.


Solution 1: Update your console software

  1. Insert a Kinect game disc.
  2. Start the game from the Xbox Dashboard.
  3. If your Xbox console software needs updating, you’ll see the following message:

Update Required: An update has been found. To apply this update, you must restart your console.

  1. Select Yes, Restart to install the update.

Solution 2: Check the cables

Xbox 360 S console

  1. Turn off the console.

    Important Remove the power/USB adapter cable, if your Kinect sensor came with one.

  2. Plug the sensor cable into the AUX port on the back of the console.
  3. Turn on the console.

Original Xbox 360 console

  1. Turn off the console.
  2. Make sure the power cord is plugged into a working electrical outlet.
  3. Make sure the USB connector is plugged into the back of the console.

The light located near the middle of the cable should be green.

No green light? Try plugging the cable into another outlet to make sure the cable is working correctly. If you need to replace the cable, contact Xbox Support.

  1. Turn on the console.

If you tried the steps above but are still having a problem, try this:

  1. Press the Guide button on your controller.
  2. Go to Settings, and then select System Settings.
  3. Select Kinect Settings.
  4. Select Kinect Sensor, and then select On.

If these steps don't resolve the problem, go to the Online Service Center and click Start Request to request a repair.
