Troubleshoot the Internet Explorer app

Learn how to troubleshoot issues with Internet Explorer on Xbox, such as error messages or problems displaying certain webpages.

Error message when you start Internet Explorer

If you encounter an error message in Internet Explorer on your Xbox 360, try the following steps to resolve the issue:

  1. Make sure that your internet connection is working properly. For help, see Can’t Connect to Xbox Live.

Sign in to Xbox Live with an Xbox Live Gold account. (An Xbox Live Gold membership is required to use Internet Explorer.)

  2. Delete Internet Explorer:
    1. Restart your Xbox console.
    2. Go to Settings and select System.
    3. Select Storage.
    4. Select All Devices.
    5. Select Games and Apps.
    6. Highlight Internet Explorer and press Y.
    7. Select Delete and choose Yes to delete all items for Internet Explorer.
  3. Reinstall Internet Explorer:
    1. From Xbox Home, go to Apps and select Browse Apps.
    2. Browse or search for Internet Explorer.
    3. Select Internet Explorer to download the app. When the download is complete, Internet Explorer automatically starts.

To start Internet Explorer later, go to Apps, My Apps, and then Internet Explorer.

Webpage isn’t displayed correctly

Some webpages may not be displayed as expected in Internet Explorer on Xbox. This can occur if the website is not formatted to appear on a widescreen HDTV or if the site uses plug-ins such as Java, Flash, or Silverlight.

If the website does not look formatted for widescreen, try the following steps:

  1. Press Y to display the Web Hub.
  2. Select the Settings icon on the address bar.
  3. Select the check box for Use my whole TV screen to show web content.
  4. Select OK, and then reload the web page.

Like many mobile devices, Internet Explorer on Xbox does not support browser plug-ins. If a webpage use a plug-in such as Flash, Java, or Silverlight, the webpage may appear blank or notify you that a plug-in is required. If you experience this issue, follow these steps to configure Internet Explorer to request the mobile version of pages you visit.

Note This setting can also help if the webpage you are visiting doesn’t look right on your TV.

  1. Press Y to display the Web Hub.
  2. Select the Settings icon on the address bar.
  3. Select the check box for Use web pages formatted for mobile devices.
  4. Select OK, and then reload the webpage.
