You can't add someone to your family on Xbox One
If you're unable to add anyone new to your family on Xbox One, try the following solutions.
Solution 1: Make sure you're using an adult account
You must use an adult account to add a member to your family. Children and teens will need to get a current adult family member to add the new person.
Solution 2: Make sure the new person isn't part of another family
An account can only be a member of one family at a time. To find out if someone is already in a family, have that person sign in on their console and then follow these steps:
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide, and then select System > Settings > Account.
- Select Family settings > Manage family members. (Or, have them sign in to their Microsoft account and select Family).
If any accounts are listed there, the person is currently in a family and must be removed from that family before they can be added to a different family.
- If the person is a child or teen, an adult in their current family must remove them.
- If the person is an adult, they can remove themselves, unless they are the only adult and child accounts are attached to the family. In this case, the children will need to be removed before the adult can be removed. The children will need to be added to another family for them to continue to use the Xbox Live service.
Note Individuals can't remove themselves from a family through the Xbox One console—this can only be done by another adult in the same family. However, individuals can remove themselves through their Microsoft account in a browser.
The new family will now be able to invite the new person to join.
