Kinect sensor isn't recognized by your Xbox One S or original Xbox One console

You've connected the Kinect sensor to your Xbox One console using the Kinect cable, and the sensor's power LED is on. However, the sensor isn't working. When you check the Kinect screen from Kinect & devices, it says the sensor isn't connected. When this happens, it means that, even though your sensor has power, it's not being recognized by your console.

Note If you see the "Kinect is unplugged" message and your sensor's power LED is not on, you're having an issue with your sensor powering on. For help with troubleshooting that issue, see Your Xbox One Kinect Sensor won't turn on.

Solutions

To resolve this problem, try the following solutions.

Solution 1: Confirm that the Kinect sensor is firmly connected via cable to the console

  1. Unplug your Kinect sensor and plug it back in.
    • If you have an Xbox One S
      1. At the back of the console, unplug the Kinect adapter cable from the USB port.
  1. Make sure the Kinect cable is securely connected to the Kinect adapter, and that the adapter's power cord is plugged in.
  2. Plug the USB cable from the Kinect adapter into the first USB port (the one next to the HDMI ports).

Note Your Kinect will only be recognized when it's plugged into the first USB port on the back of the console. The other USB ports on the console will not work with Kinect.

Also, for best practice, make sure your Kinect sensor and Kinect adapter are not sitting directly on top of your console.

  • If you have an original Xbox One
    1. At the back of the console, unplug the cable from the Kinect sensor port.
  1. Plug the cable back into the Kinect sensor port.
  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Select System > Settings > Kinect & devices > Kinect.
  3. Wait up to 2 minutes for the sensor to be recognized.

Solution 2: Confirm that the Kinect sensor is turned on in the Kinect settings

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Select System > Settings > Kinect & devices > Kinect.
  3. Verify that Kinect on is selected.

Solution 3: Reset the Kinect sensor's connection to the Xbox One console

  1. Turn off the console by pressing the Xbox button on the front of the console for 10 seconds.
  2. Unplug the console's power, and then unplug the Kinect sensor from the Xbox One console.
  3. Plug the console power back in, and then press the Xbox button on your console to turn it on.
  4. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
  5. Select System > Settings > Kinect & devices > Kinect.
  6. Plug the Kinect sensor into the back of the console and wait up to 2 minutes for it to be recognized.

Note If your sensor needs an update, the screen will indicate that an update is in progress.

If the solutions above didn't resolve the problem, your Kinect sensor needs to be repaired. Request a repair at Device service and repair. Console registration is required to replace the sensor.
