Installing games remotely to your Xbox One or Windows 10 PC

If you’re away from your device, you can remotely install games so that they’re ready to play when you get back.

Getting your device ready

Xbox One

Before you get started, you’ll need to do the following:

  1. Rename your console. This will help you to identify it easily.
    1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide, and then go to System > Settings > System > Console info.
    2. Select Name, and then enter your new console name. (Use only letters, numbers, and hyphens.)
    3. Select Restart now.
  2. Set your console to Instant-on. Your console will need to be in standby mode for game installations to be triggered remotely.
    1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide, and then go to System > Settings > Power & startup > Power mode & startup.
    2. Select Power mode to change the setting to Instant-on.
  3. Enable Remote Install. This is disabled on your console by default.
    1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide, and then go to System > Settings > System > Updates & downloads.
    2. Select Allow remote installs.

Windows 10 PC

Before you get started, you’ll need to do the following:

  1. Make sure your PC is on and connected to a network. Your PC must be turned on and connected to the internet for remote install to work.

Note If the PC is in Sleep mode, offline, or shut down, the game will not begin downloading. If in Sleep mode or offline, the game will be added to the download queue and begin once the PC is woken up or reconnected to the internet. If the PC was shut down, the game will not be added to the download queue until the next time you install another game. If the PC is shut down during the install, the game will continue upon restart.

  2. Make sure you’re signed in to your PC with the same Microsoft account as your Xbox Live account.

Note If multiple users are signed in to the PC when a remote install is started, you may see a “401 Unauthorized” error message. You can try again later or wait until you’re physically on the device.

  3. Make sure you’re signed in to the Xbox (Beta) and Microsoft Store apps with the same Microsoft account as your Xbox Live account. Note that the apps don’t need to be running.

Remotely installing a game

When you purchase a game, take advantage of your Game Pass subscription, or if you already own a game, you can remotely install it on your Xbox One console or Windows 10 PC.

Remote install from the Microsoft Store

You can install to a remote device from the Microsoft Store app on Windows 10, or from the Microsoft Store in a web browser.

On the game’s product page, select […] next to the Install button, and then Install on my devices. You’ll see a list of all devices to which you can install remotely. Select the devices you want to install the game to, and then select Install now.

Remote install from the Game Pass mobile app

Select the game you want to install, and then select Install on Xbox or Install on PC. The game will install to the default Xbox One or default PC that you have set in the Xbox Game Pass app.

Note The default console is your home Xbox unless you change it.

To change your default Xbox One or PC:

  1. Tap your gamerpic in the bottom-right corner of the app.
  2. Select the Settings gear icon on the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Select either Select default Xbox One or Select default PC.
  4. From the list of your known devices, select the device you want to set as the default.

Note This default device is where your games will be installed when you select Install on Xbox or Install on PC until you change your default device again.
