Set up live TV with your Xbox One X, Xbox One S, or original Xbox One console

This page describes the requirements for using OneGuide on Xbox One X, Xbox One S, or the original Xbox One, so you can access TV service from your console. It also describes how to configure your Xbox One X, Xbox One S, or original Xbox One console to control your TV, audio receiver, and set-top box.

Note Channel information in OneGuide is not available in all regions. You can still use HDMI pass-through to view TV content through Xbox One, but OneGuide will not show your TV listings. For a list of Xbox One features and the regions where they're available, see Xbox One Feature Availability.

Requirements

To use OneGuide with your TV and Xbox One, you need the following:

  • A cable or satellite set-top box with HDMI output, or an Xbox One USB TV Tuner.
  • A connection to Xbox Live to download channel lineup information for OneGuide.
  • A Kinect sensor or an IR emitter cable.

Note An IR emitter is built into the front of the Xbox One S and Xbox One X consoles, so a Kinect sensor or an IR emitter is not required.

Connecting your console to your home theater

Before setting up OneGuide, confirm that your console is correctly connected to your home theater system and is ready for live TV.

For more information, see How to connect your Xbox One to your home theater system for live TV.

Setting up TV for the first time

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide, and select System > Settings > TV & display options > OneGuide.
  2. The console will try to detect an HDMI-in signal. If the source of your HDMI signal shows up on the picture of the TV screen, select Next to continue and skip to step 4. If the source of your HDMI signal doesn’t appear, go on to step 3.
  3. If you don’t see the source of your HDMI signal displayed on the picture of the TV screen, you’ll have to verify that your console is receiving a signal from your set-top box:
    1. Confirm that your set-top box is connected by HDMI cable to the HDMI port on your console.
    2. If, after a few seconds, you don't get live TV on your Xbox screen, see You see a black screen or experience poor video quality when watching TV with Xbox One.
    3. Once live TV appears, select Next.
  4. On the OneGuide screen, select Next to begin the setup of your cable or satellite TV provider’s channel guide. Follow the steps below to help your console learn how to control your cable or satellite set-top box.
    1. Enter your postal code and select Next to find TV providers in your area.
    2. From the dropdown menu, select your cable or satellite TV provider.

Note If your provider doesn't appear in the list, or if you watch broadcast TV only, select Antenna, and then press Next.

    3. Select your TV lineup, and then select Next.
    4. Enter the provider of your cable or satellite set-top box.
    5. If your console recognizes your brand, you'll see the message, "Your cable or satellite box has been set up." Select Next. If it does not recognize it, follow the onscreen guidance to help your console learn how to control your set-top box.
  5. Back out of OneGuide and select Device control.
    1. Select the TV dropdown and select TV setup. Your console will let you know if it’s been able to detect your TV. If it has, select Next. If it doesn’t, select Enter it manually.
    2. Once your console has successfully identified your TV, you’ll see the message, “Your TV has been set up."
Notes
  • If your TV provider isn't listed, it might not be compatible with OneGuide at this time. Channel lineup and specific show information are currently not available in all regions.
  • For more information about finding your TV provider, see our TV Hardware Information forums.

Making changes later

It's easy to make changes to your configuration after you've set it up. Here's how:

  1. Press the Xbox button  to open the guide.
  2. Select System > Settings > General > TV & display options.
  3. Update the settings that you want to change.

Watch TV with OneGuide

Note OneGuide only supports a limited set of features or menus on set-top boxes. You’ll have to use your remote to access other features on your set-top box.
