What to expect if you're already playing Minecraft on other devices

Can I continue playing my existing version of Minecraft on PC/Mac?

Yes, you can. The Windows 10 and PC/Mac versions will continue to co-exist as separate games.

What happens to my existing Minecraft worlds? Can they be played on the Windows 10 edition?

Your existing Minecraft experience won’t change at all, and the Windows 10 edition isn’t intended to be an upgrade to your existing game. You can play the Windows 10 edition in parallel with the Java PC/Mac version, allowing you to see the new features and provide feedback—and at the same time maintain your existing worlds.

I'm an existing Xbox or Windows Phone player. Can I transfer my existing Minecraft worlds to Windows 10?

The Windows 10 Edition does not currently support the transferring of worlds from other devices.

Playing the Windows 10 edition

Can I play online with other people on Windows 10? Or on different devices?

You can play with up to four other people running Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition or Pocket Edition on your local network. You can also play online with up to four of your Xbox Live friends in online multiplayer gaming.

If you or your friends subscribe to Minecraft Realms, you can play online with up to 10 players on different devices, depending on the Realm owner’s type of subscription. Visit Minecraft Realms support at Microsoft, or Mojang support for more information.

I'm new to Minecraft. What do I do, and how do I play?

Getting started with Minecraft is one of the fun and unique features of the game. There are no tutorials or help guides—the idea is that you learn by playing the game and working it out for yourself. However, if you get stuck or want to learn how to progress within the game, such as how to build items or expand your inventory, visit the Minecraft Wiki page, where millions of other players are available to help you.

How do I change how my character looks?

If you don't want to play as Steve or Alex, you can choose from one of our skin packs by clicking "Skins" on the home page, or you can create and upload your own personalized skin. For more info, see Create custom skins for Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition.

Do I need to be online or connected to the Internet to play Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition?

If you’re planning to be in an area with no online coverage, such as a long-distance flight or a sailing excursion, you can prepare your Windows 10 device to allow you to play Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition offline.

For details on how to configure your Windows 10 device for offline play, visit Play games offline on Windows 10 using Offline mode.

The following in-game modes are supported while playing offline:

  • Single Player
  • Multiplayer via LAN

The following in-game modes require an online connection:

  • Realms
  • Multiplayer via Xbox Live

If you play offline, some features, such as the ability to purchase additional items from Microsoft Store, will not be available. Additionally, any leaderboards will be unavailable while you're offline.

If you earn any achievements while playing offline, they will sync to your account the next time you sign in to Xbox Live on your device. Your game save progress will also sync when you sign in to Xbox Live.

How do I record and upload game clips?

For info about creating game clips, see Record game clips with Game DVR on Windows 10.

How do I provide feedback on the game?

The development team at Minecraft is actively working on feedback as they receive it to bring you the best version of Minecraft ever made. If you have comments or suggestions to share with the development team, go to the Minecraft Feedback page.

Where do I find out more about Minecraft?

Once you've created your Minecraft world and have mastered the basics, there's a whole community dedicated to helping you explore all the features of the game and what you can do in your world. Visit the Minecraft Wiki page to learn more.

If you're playing Minecraft on a platform other than Windows 10 and you need support, see Getting help for Minecraft on different devices.

Playing Minecraft on Oculus Rift

In order to play Minecraft on Oculus Rift, you’ll need to have a copy of Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition purchased either from Microsoft Store, or from the Oculus Store. Once you’ve purchased it, signing in to both your Microsoft account and your Oculus account will sync the game between the two. This also means that any add-ons or skin packs you purchase will be available to play on your Oculus Rift.

I don't have Windows 10—I’m running Windows 7/Windows 8/Linux/OSX. Can I use Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition with Oculus Rift support?

You’ll need to have the Windows 10 operating system running in order to use Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition. You’ll also need to be running version 1511 or later. For help on how to upgrade to the latest version of Windows, visit Windows Update: FAQ (you’ll also be given steps on how to upgrade in-game).

The Oculus Minecraft app is crashing with the error 0x80070422. What do I do?

  1. Press the Windows key and type Services.
  2. Scroll down to Windows Update.
  3. Right-click and select Start from the menu.

My Oculus Minecraft app says that Windows 10, Update 1511 is required. What do I do?

Restart the Oculus Store and see if the Oculus Minecraft app update fixes this. If not, this may be due to a Windows update either failing or not being applied. To troubleshoot:

  1. Download and run the official Windows Update Troubleshooter here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/E/7/FE74974A-9029-41A0-9EB2-9CCE3FC20B99/WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab.
  2. Press the Windows key and type Check for Updates.

Follow the steps directly above to see if there are any missing Windows updates available.

The Oculus Minecraft app says that launching Minecraft "failed." Why?

Make sure you aren't already running Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition. If you are, be sure to close the app first before trying to play it from the Oculus Minecraft app. If you continue to have problems, try running Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition by playing it from the Xbox app. This may give you more insight into why the game won't play. If you continue to have issues, you can always contact Xbox Support or click "Contact Us" on the Minecraft Feedback page.

I’m seeing strange graphics issues when I try to play the game. What’s happening?

Make certain your graphics drivers are up to date. If you have an Nvidia graphics card, you may need to visit the Nvidia support site to get the most up-to-date drivers for your graphics card. Download and install the new drivers, and then restart your computer.

I have dual graphics cards and multiple monitors. I can hear the Minecraft music, but Minecraft is stuck on a white screen with “Please wait.” What do I do?

This may be due to some confusion between your graphics cards regarding HDMI input and the Rift. If you have HDMI inputs going into both cards, unplug the HDMI input that’s not associated with the Oculus Rift.
