Error 80A40008 occurs due to a connectivity or account issue on Xbox One

You see the following error message when you try to sign in to your Xbox profile or recover your profile on your Xbox One console:

There was a problem and we couldn't continue

0x80A40008

This may mean one of the following things:

  • There's an Xbox Live connectivity issue.
  • You entered the wrong Microsoft account information (email address or password).
  • There's an issue with your Microsoft account.
  • You have too many accounts saved to your Xbox One console.

Solutions

To solve this problem, try the following solutions.

Solution 1: Check the Xbox Live service status

If you see any alerts here, wait until the service is up and running and try again:

Solution 2: Test your Xbox Live connection

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide and go to System.
  2. Select Settings > Network > Network settings.
  3. Scroll right and select Test network connection.

If you get the "Everything is good" message, try to sign in to your Xbox profile. If you don't get this message, try the Xbox One Network Connection Error Solution.

Solution 3: Remove and re-add your account

  1. Remove your account from the console. Here’s how:
    1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide and go to System.
    2. Select Settings > Account > Remove accounts.
    3. Scroll right and highlight your account to select it.
    4. Select Remove.
  2. Restart your console. Here's how:
    1. Press and hold the Xbox button  in the center of your Xbox One controller to open the Power Center.
    2. Select Restart console.
    3. Select Restart.

      Note If the console appears to be frozen, press and hold the Xbox button  on the console for 10 seconds, until the console turns off. After the console shuts down, touch the Xbox button  on the console again to restart.

  1. Re-add your account to the console. Here's how:
    1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide and select Sign in.
    2. Scroll down to Manage accounts.
    3. Select Add new.
    4. Enter your Microsoft account email address and password, and then select Enter.
    5. Verify the privacy settings you've set for your account. These apply to any Xbox One console that you sign in to.
    6. Select Next.
    7. On the Choose a color screen, select the color for your Home screen to differentiate between you and others using this console.
    8. Select Next.
    9. When you're reminded of the gamerpic that's associated with your profile, select Next.
    10. Select your sign-in preferences.
Solution 4: Remove all accounts on the console

If you have a large number of accounts saved to your console, remove all of them and restart the console before re-adding your account as outlined in Solution 3 above.

If, after removing all accounts and re-adding yours, you still cannot sign in, you will need to restore factory settings on the console. Please read and follow the instructions found here very carefully.

Warning Restoring your console to the factory default settings erases all accounts, apps, games, saved games, and settings. Anything not synchronized with Xbox Live will be lost. Your console syncs with Xbox Live automatically when it is connected with the service.
