Display troubleshooter appears during Xbox One console setup
This page describes how to use the display troubleshooter, and why it may appear during setup of your Xbox One. If you're looking for help with other display issues, see How to adjust the display settings on your Xbox One console.
Note If you see a blank or black screen when you start your Xbox One console, see Troubleshooting a blank TV screen or monitor while your Xbox One is on.
The display troubleshooter can appear if:
- The HDMI cable is faulty.
Inspect the HDMI cable for damage. Also verify that the cable is plugged in and seated properly.
- There's a device between your Xbox One and your TV.
Plug the HDMI cable directly into your TV. If this fixes the issue, you can configure your video settings later. For more information, see How to adjust the display settings on your Xbox One console.
- Your Xbox One can't determine the resolution of your TV.
The Xbox One X and Xbox One S consoles send digital audio and video signals to your TV through the HDMI cable, and your TV sends signals back to the consoles in constant two-way communication. One of the messages the TV sends is extended display identification data (EDID). The EDID describes the modes, resolutions, and refresh rates that the TV supports. The Xbox One acknowledges the EDID and then sends the picture at the best possible resolution for the TV.
Your Xbox One displays 480p if it does not receive an EDID from your TV. This is the lowest resolution possible for the Xbox One. However, the console was not designed to display at low resolutions. In this situation, the display troubleshooter appears.
Using the display troubleshooter
To use the display troubleshooter, follow these steps:
- Check the current resolution setting on your TV.
- Set the resolution to 1080p if your TV supports this resolution. If your TV only supports 720p or 1080i, set your TV to 720p. Then, on your console, select the matching resolution on the Change your display screen.
- If your resolution is set to Auto Detect, select 1080p from the Change your display screen on your console.
Note For more information about TV resolutions, see About TV resolutions and Xbox One.
If the screen changes to full size, you've selected the right resolution. To keep this setting, select Keep display at (resolution). This option will close the display troubleshooter and return you to the setup process.
Note It's possible that your console thinks your TV is receiving a DVI connection instead of an HDMI connection. You won't have sound if your console is in DVI mode, so you won't be able to calibrate your Kinect's microphones during setup. When you reach the Home screen for the first time, you can adjust the display settings and calibrate your Kinect.
To change the display settings on the Home screen to re-enable HDMI:
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Select System > Settings > General.
- Select TV & display options.
- Select Video fidelity & overscan.
Under Display, select HDMI from the dropdown. For more information, see How to adjust the display settings on your Xbox One console.
After you adjust the sound settings, you can set up your Kinect sensor. For more information, see Tips for setting up your Kinect with Xbox One.
Note If you've done this on an Xbox One X or Xbox One S with an older TV, but you later switch to a 4K TV, make sure to switch TV connection back to Auto-detect. 4K isn't available when it's set to HDMI.
If you've changed your TV resolution and your screen turns black or doesn't look correct, wait 10 seconds and the screen will return to the 480p setting. Select Try a different resolution.
After you select Try a different resolution, you'll return to the Change your display screen. There, you can try the remaining resolution option.
If neither 720p nor 1080p work with your TV, select None of these work.
At this point, you can continue with setup using the 480p resolution, though it's not optimal, or you can select a different TV to connect to your Xbox One.
