Video: Add a friend. If you know someone's gamertag, add them to your Friends list on Xbox Live. You can also get a list of people you've recently played multiplayer games with.

You can have up to 1,000 Xbox friends. Having someone on your friends list allows you to quickly find them online and get set for your next gaming adventure.
Note You have to know a person's gamertag in order to add them to your friends list.
After you sign in, press the Xbox button to open the guide.
Under Friends & clubs, select Find someone.
Search for a gamertag. Be sure to pay close attention to the gamertag's spelling and spacing.
Select Add friend to add the person’s gamertag to your friends list.
Select Friend or Favorite to choose what kind of information you share with that person. You can also select Share my real name to help your friend recognize you.
Select Submit.
Note Your friends will see you as a follower and will be able to see the info you share with friends, based on your privacy settings.
Add friends on the Xbox app
Sign in to the Xbox app.
Under the Friends section on the Home screen, type the gamertag in the Find people or clubs box and press Enter. Be sure to pay close attention to the gamertag's spelling and spacing.
Select Add friend to add the person’s gamertag to your friends list.
Select Friend or Favorite to choose what kind of information you share with that person. You can also select Share my real name to help your friend recognize you.
Select OK.

Add friends on Xbox.com
From the Xbox.com page, select Sign in at the top right-hand side of the page.
Select your gamerpic, and from the dropdown, select Friends.
Type the gamertag in the Search gamertag box. Be sure to pay close attention to the gamertag's spelling and spacing.
Select Add friend to add the person’s gamertag to your friends list.
