Set up and use SmartGlass on Xbox One
SmartGlass lets your console and connected devices interact in many ways. You can access SmartGlass mobile apps even when you’re not using your console.
Note To control your Xbox One with SmartGlass, or to perform SmartGlass-related activities on the console, the console has to be turned on and connected to the SmartGlass device.
SmartGlass device requirements
To use SmartGlass on the console or on another device, you need the following:
- An Xbox profile
- Xbox One SmartGlass software that’s running on a SmartGlass-compatible device, such as:
- Xbox One SmartGlass for Windows 8
- Xbox One SmartGlass for Windows Phone
Note To control OneGuide on your Xbox One from your Windows PC or your Windows Phone, you must use the Xbox One SmartGlass software. To connect to your Xbox One console for other purposes, you can use the Xbox App on Windows, iOS, or Android. The Xbox 360 SmartGlass software will not connect to your Xbox One.
SmartGlass connection requirements
SmartGlass uses a connection between your Xbox One and a connected device. Both your console and the connected device must be turned on and signed in to Xbox Live. You can connect over:
- A local or home network
- The Internet
- A 3G or 4G cellular data network
The faster and more reliable your connection, the better performance SmartGlass will deliver. For best results, we recommend using your local network.
Set up SmartGlass on your Xbox One
Here’s how to get SmartGlass up and running on your console:
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Select Settings and then select All Settings.
- Select Preferences and then select Xbox app connections.
- In Xbox app connections, select the option that best meets your needs.
Set up your SmartGlass device to connect to your console
On your SmartGlass device, sign in to your SmartGlass app using the Microsoft account that’s associated with your Xbox gamertag. If you don’t know the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox account, see the Microsoft account FAQ. Then, you can connect your SmartGlass device to your console.
The SmartGlass app is slow to respond, or you get a slow-connection message
Connect your phone to your home wireless network. Although your smartphone or tablet can communicate with your console over a cellular network, you will get the best performance if your phone is connected to the same wireless network as your console.Solution for Windows PCs

The SmartGlass app can’t find or connect to your console
If SmartGlass can’t find your Xbox, make sure the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox Live gamertag is the same Microsoft account that you use to sign in to SmartGlass.
